The core group of the IWEF was initially constituted by representatives from seven schools – four schools from Hyderabad, two from Mumbai and one from Bengaluru. These were schools that had had a minimum of 5 years of active involvement in Waldorf education. Right at the outset, the members of the IWEF unanimously agreed that the Forum would actively play the role of a facilitator.
The Forum shares with new schools and organisations a list of basic principles/tenets that need to be adhered to, that would qualify a school to be called a Waldorf school. The IWEF, through designated members, would visit schools that request for such a visit and offer suggestions that help in putting the aforesaid principles in place.
Besides the visits to schools, the two most important aspects of Waldorf education that the IWEF wishes to nurture and strengthen are: pedagogical support and empowerement through comprehensive training. The IWEF intends to provide pedagogical support through organising meetings of teachers enabling sharing and exchange of best practices. Also, the Forum will publicise and propagate some of the popular Waldorf training programmes organised through different schools and also by individual teachers who have significant number of years of teaching experience in Waldorf schools.
The Forum, with support of all its members, intends to shift from currently being an informal gathering of like-minded schools to being the umbrella forum for all. This will empower Waldorf inspired initiatives and facilitate the strong impact of Waldorf Education in India.
IWEF is the nodal agency that carries information to and fro from Waldorf schools in India to International fora like the Friends of Waldorf, which publishes the World list of Waldorf schools and Hague circle, the International forum of Waldorf schools.
